What kind of cloth diaper works best while the umbilical cord is healing?
My husband and I have decided to cloth diaper our first child, who will be arriving in late November.
Right now I have about 30 or so cloth diapers of various kinds to try, including about 15 pocket diapers (babyland brand) and inserts, 4 All-In-Ones (Homemade and Bella Bottoms), 5 one-size Flip diaper covers with Stay-dry liners, 3 size small velcro PUL diaper covers and 3 or 4 fitted diapers. I’m planning on buying some prefolds and snappis to try, and I also just felted 4 wool sweaters to make wool soakers out of (I found a free pattern online).
But when our little girl is newborn and still has her umbilical cord stump, I’m not sure what diapers would work best. I do NOT want to use disposables, and I hear Kissaluvs size 0 work well, but they are SUPER expensive. The cheapest I’ve found them is .50 each (used) plus shipping. I can sew, and would be happy to make some diapers, if I knew what I was doing, but I feel kind of lost.
Can I use prefolds and covers for the first 3 or so weeks while she still has her umbilical cord, or will it rub her cord? If I can use prefolds, will the wool soaker covers be better, or the PUL? Should I just make some fitted diapers with the cord section cut out? Any advice from cloth-experienced mamas would be appreciated!

Trust me on this. You are not going to feel like washing, drying, and folding cloth diapers when you first bring your new baby home from the hospital. Use disposable Pampers swaddlers size newborn. They have a notch cut out in the front of the diaper for the umbilical cord stump to allow it to heal. They are just as soft as cloth and I have never had any leaks when using them on my daughter.
Its funny how people are so persistent about using cloth diapers until they actually HAVE to use cloth diapers….. believe me you’ll change your mind. Most brands of disposables have newborn diapers with the front cut down a bit for the umbilical cord.
I use bumGenius Cloth Diapers, the One Size Cloth Diaper 3.0 ones they can be used for a child from 7 pounds to 35 pounds and for a newborn you just fold down the insert stopper to make it so it stays below the umbilical cord. They are expensive, $18.09 each for the white ones, but to me they are worth it cuz I can use them til she is potty trained and since they are white I can use them for my next child as well.

I too use the Bum Genius one-size diapers. They have an area on the front with two layers of PUL so you can fold it down over the velcro for newborns with an umbilical stump. As mentioned by other posters though, you may not want to deal with washing or stuffing diapers right after giving birth. Another good alternative to the "guilt" of disposable diapers is to use Nature Babycare diapers. They are like disposables in that you throw them away, only they are 100% biodegradable and compostable. I’ve had two children, cloth diapered both of them. If not having to wash and stuff diapers allows you to catch a nap, then go with disposables!
