Try fleece covers for nighttime use, or wool, which you can find for quite cheap on the FSOT forum of diaperswappers. You can also make your own fleece soaker for very cheap (I made 3 out of one yard of cloth, size XL). I don't use g diapers so I can't tell you how your initial idea will work. Thirsties PUL covers are also good to use for nights and these are my favorite PUL covers. They run about $12 but you can get them used. I've purchased several used pockets and covers and they've all been in really good condition and very clean.

I like wool for at night as well. I'm not very crafty, and I've made several wool soakers out of thrift store sweaters.
