Are you really not supposed to wash newborns with any kind of baby soap? Just water?

I read that even johnsons baby wash is not supposed to be used on newborns because it can dry out there skin too much? It says to only sponge bathe babies with water. I’m going to be a first time mom in a few weeks so I’m just double checking.

I just had my daughter two months ago and have washed her with Johnsons baby wash since birth. Even the nurses in the hospital used soap when she was only an hour old. Newborn’s skin will be dry, but I just used baby lotion after her bath and now her skin is just fine. The biggest thing to watch for is that you can not get soap or water in their umbilical cord until it falls off and heals (usually about two weeks). Congrats! There is nothing better than being a mom!
i washed my son with only water until he was two months old, he was born with a mop of hair though so we had to shampoo his hair from when he was one week old!!! he’s now 5months and he’s already needed a haircut!
Congratulations. Last I heard, soap and shampoo are fine. Just wash their faces with water only. When my son was born, the nurses at the hospital used soap on him.
i used johnson and johnsons stuff on my son since he could have full baths at around 2 weeks old (when his cord stump fell off) never had a problem with it.
Same as answer 2. When my son was 2 days old, the nurse at the hospital showed me how to give a bath. She prepared the tub with some Johnson & Johnson bubbles. So I never knew otherwise!
PS: No adverse effects were seen on his skin. I only used a little bit at home.
Honestly, I never heard of that. Maybe I was misinformed, but I used a little bit of baby wash on my daughter. But I also used baby lotion after every bath. She smelled so good too. She still does, we use the gerber cucumber melon baby wash smells sooo good.
You can use mild baby wash, but you’ll only need a tiny bit. Too much of it, or anything with a lot of lather, would be drying. Good luck!
That is correct. You should NOT wash babies under about 5 months at least I would say, in anything but warm water. Their skin is very sensitive, as it has been submerged in amniotic fluid for so long.
i used disposable washclothes since birth. it is fine
The advice I was given was to just used water for the first couple of week. My son was born with loads of hair so we had to use shampoo but I decided not to use soaps and lotions as my husband has mild eczema so didn’t want to aggravate Ethan’s delicate skin.
He is ten week old now and we use Johnson’s baby bath and lotions. Babies don’t really get that dirty so there isn’t a need to used anything other than water.
Congratulations on your impending arrivalal!arrival
weused johnson and johnsons baby wash once a week and used plain water the rest of the time.
once the umbilical cord falls off you can use baby wash. I gave my son his first bath in the NICU of the hospital. He hated every moment of it. Now he’s 5 years old and loves taking a bath.
